This is existential dread in book form. Those crippling feelings that cloud your mind and tighten your chest when you lay awake in bed and your thoughts drift to the vastness of the universe and eternity… this book will send them rushing through you.
There really is no point getting into plot, characters, and “spoilers” here, because this book really isn’t about those things, and it’s so short that you can easily read through it in a couple hours.
Ultimately, A Short Stay In Hell is the kind of book that should leave you thinking deeply about life, death, the universe, meaning, love, faith, and hope long after you read it, or at least for as long as you can bare to think about the crushing weight of existence. Generally, we turn to fiction as a distraction from anxieties, fears, and the mundanity of everyday life. This book offers exactly the opposite experience, and yet somehow I managed to laugh and feel moved.
